Methodology: Collision-type accidents are estimated by multiplying the state's total accidents by national-level collision-type proportions (MoRTH 2023 Table 1.5). Persons killed in each collision type are estimated by applying that type's national killed-share to the state's total fatalities. MoRTH does not publish state-wise collision-type breakdowns directly.

  • 2023 report is the master 5-year dataset (Tables 1.1, 1.4, 1.6, 5.1, 5.6, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3).

  • National: 2005–2023 long-term trend; 2019–2023 sub-categories.
  • State / UT: all 28 states + 9 UTs (incl. Ladakh from 2020), 2019–2023.
  • City: 50 million-plus cities, 2022–2023 detail; top-10 trend 2019–2023.

Reconciliation

  • State-wise sums for 2019, 2022, 2023 reconcile to All-India totals exactly.
  • City-wise sums match the 50-city total exactly for both 2022 and 2023.

Why this dashboard?

This India Road Crash Intelligence Platform brings together everything I've worked on for the past several years - geospatial analysis, crash data, blackspot identification, iRAP star ratings, data visualisation and urban planning. Two of my published research papers (15th and 17th Urban Mobility India Conferences) focus on pedestrian crashes in Chennai - a topic this dashboard quantifies at national, state and city level. Built as a public-facing tool to make MoRTH's annual report tables explorable, comparable and useful for policy-makers, researchers and citizens.
